I found many, many enrapturing lines in this book; so many that I felt silly wanting to keep reading a kids chapter book on a fictitious monster!!
ReplyDeleteHere are a few of my favorite lines from the book:
-"Enough room to fit every person on this earth three times over. Certainly enough room for a few mysteries." (1)
This was one of two quotes that made me think that Nessie does exist. I was never aware at how large the Loch is and with a body of water that large, I'm sure that there must be many undiscovered species living in the Loch, not just Nessie!
- "An aeronautical engineer, Tim gave up his job and devoted the next twenty years to investigating the Loch Ness Monster." (42)
This was the second of two quotes that made me think Nessie exists. If a aeronautical engineer would quit his job because of a sighting, there must be some truth!!
This book had so many quotes that are great for making predictions and inferring. I especially like the following quote, when Vanessa found Lee's paintings: "When she turned the first and the largest canvas around, the shock was so great that she actually dropped it. The thud was soft enough but she was terrified someone had heard it and would come to investigate. When there was no sound, she picked it up again and held it tightly. Her hands were shaking." (88).
ReplyDelete"All I know is that it has something to do with the magic of the loch." (150). I really liked that Flitcroft used the word "magic" to describe the feeling of the Loch. Reading the descriptions and reactions of the sightings of Nessie, it does sound somewhat magical and intriguing!
ReplyDeleteKathryn, your first quote stood out for me as well. It really gave the reader an idea of just how large an area the loch actually covered and certainly left the reader with the idea that there was more than likely a few undiscovered creatures lurking in the water.
ReplyDeleteMany of the excerpts from the beginning of each chapter made the reader question the idea behind weather or not the monster could potentially exist.
The quote you chose when Vanessa found the canvases made it very clear that she and Lee had something much bigger than her father in common.
Finally, the magic of the loch is evident througout the book. It is clearly a mystical and intriguing place to be.
Sometimes what isn't said can speak a thousand words. I found the father's silence about Lee and the trip to speak volumes. I suspected that she would be involved in the trip in some way.
ReplyDeleteI believe that when Lee stated, "I'm a zoologist; I work for Greenpeace" this made Vanessa look at Lee in a whole new light. She actually had some respect for her.
I agree that all of your chosen quotes were important to the story. This book kept us all hooked so I almost think any part can be a "golden line."
ReplyDeleteHillary - I agree that sometimes silence says more than certain quotes at times. The connection between Lee and Rebecca (and Nessie) is not stated until the end of the story so it makes you feel like you are in Rebecca's mind and you can tell she has not put 2 and 2 together about Lena and Lee and how it relates to herself.
I also agree with all the golden lines that you girls pulled from the book. It kept me wanting to read more of the story. As each book should, this book really hooked me by the first line in the first chapter, describing the width and length of the Loch Ness. I believe when they were at the dinner table and Pat had said, "Then she'd be held down under water. If she drowned she was innocent, but if she survived she was a waitch" (p.52). Within this quote, I think that it made Lee and Vanessa closer by the end of the story since the two of them survived their "drowning". It comes together at the end when Vanessa read Lee's diary and Lee had said, "Perhaps I am a witch."
ReplyDeleteKathryn and Hillary - I agree that the first quote of "Enough room to fit every person on this earth three times over. Certainly enough room for a few mysteries" (1)really does set the tone for the book. It is a good hook to get the reader enticed about the mystery to come. This quote contains statistical information which captures the readers interest right away; at least it did for me.
ReplyDeleteKathryn's other quote,"An aeronautical engineer, Tim gave up his job and devoted the next twenty years to investigating the Loch Ness Monster" (42)was also very interesting to me. For this project I had the role of researcher and I found it very interesting that doctors and even clergymen insisted that they saw the Loch Ness monster. There has to be truth somewhere if people give up their jobs or insist they saw something.
I also highlighted this quote from page 4, "She was there with her in that small, bleak attic. It was then that she knew with certainty that she would find what she was looking for." "She" in the first sentence refers to Vanessa's deceased mother Marie and with her presence, Vanessa can accomplish anything!
ReplyDeleteAll these quotes really grab the reader. I think that Flitcroft uses great language and words in her writing. I agree that the first quote in the book that describes the Loch Ness is a golden line because it instantly hooks the reader. Who wouldn't want to learn more about the "mysteries" of the Loch Ness monster after reading that? I agree with Hillary that silence can sometimes be more powerful than speaking. The quote on page 170 says "On their final day in the cottage, nobody talked much and there was a strange feeling of anticipation in the air." It's a perfect example of how sometimes silence produces more feelings and emotions than words can. After the entire ordeal, no one had much to say because I think they all somehow new what went on during Vanessa's disappearance and what was going on between Vanessa and Lee. I think this whole book was full of silent anticipation.
ReplyDeleteI also loved that quote that Kathryn included "All I know is that it has something to do with the magic of the loch." (150). I couldn't think of a better word to describe the loch other than magical. This whole book had a sense of magic to it, including the way that Vanessa and Lee made such a connection and how even though Vanessa's mom had passed she was always in her presence one way or another. Vanessa's interest and love of Nessie could also be described as magical.
Amelia,
ReplyDeleteI agree with your comment that the Loch certainly is magical, from the green algae to Vanessa "finding" Nessie. It's a magical world known to Nessie, Vanessa, and Lee. Now because of this magical world, Lee and Vanessa have a deep connection that only they can share. Perhaps, Vanessa will welcome Lee into her life a bit more easily, now that they share the share experience.
